I had my first panic attack when I was 7, in assembly. But I had no idea what it was until I joined the dots about 35 years later.
I have always been fascinated by the links between physical and mental health and connections to other people. I have had a professional career in mental health, and have also had personal experience of mental illness.
Promote Mental Health came about after I had to leave my job due to my mental health. I had been looking for a way out of my previous post, had been freelancing for other organisations and absolutely loved the training aspect of my job.
I wanted to develop a training business with a difference. Training based on scientific evidence, life experience of working in mental health, and my personal experiences of going through it. I wanted to, not only support organisation to upskill they employees, but to embed mental health and wellbeing at the heart of their organisation and not use it as a tick box.
“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ― Mark Twain
This is how my work at Promote Mental Health makes me feel. It does not feel like a job, just something that is part of me. I get pleasure out of connecting with other, upskilling and empowering them with knowledge and skills around mental health.
My training has the ability to change organisations and lives. I was bowled over last year to hear that a gentleman on one of my Mental Health First Aid courses has used his skills to save the life of someone who was suicidal. This was the most powerful feedback I had ever received and makes it all worthwhile.
This powerful combination of skills and life experience is what Promote Mental Health is all about. It is about education, skills and confidence. It is about embedding an approach within an organisation to help them survive and thrive. It is about working with organisation to design training to meet your specific needs.
All of this gives us a number of unique selling points in the training and consultancy market.
