This week Promote Mental Health have been working with a local secondary school to support them with suicide prevention. We have been supporting Impington Village College to download the R;pple Suicide browser extension.

R;pple is an interceptive tool designed to present a visual prompt when a person searches for harmful keywords or phrases relating to the topic of self-harm or suicide. These phrases include any words or terminology which have been identified as displaying potentially damaging online content. It works alongside any filtering solution already in place, without collecting data on your organisation or making your IT systems vulnerable to attack.

Promote Mental Health have been supporting the college to understand, roll out and embed R;pple as an extended part of their pastoral care curriculum. R;pple has been integrated into all student Chromebooks and an email has gone out to parents encouraging them to add Ripple on personal devices, particularly encouraging children to install it on their phones and devices.

In our training at Promote Mental Health we discuss mental health statistics most days when delivering Mental Health First Aid and Suicide Prevention Training, but these statistics are still shocking.

  • Every 90 minutes someone in the UK and Ireland takes their life (Samaritans)
  • Over 5 young people will take their life today (Samaritans)
  • 7% of UK children attempt suicide by the time they reach 17 years old (The Guardian)
  • Male suicide is at its highest rate in 20 years in 2020 (ONS)
  • 26.8% of people aged 16-24 report having had suicidal thoughts in their lifetime, a higher percentage than any other age group (MHFA)
  • Harmful internet use was found in 26% of deaths in under 20s (Samaritans)

Ripple can be downloaded by the touch of a button, literally 2 clicks on any device.
