UK at the brink of burn out 🫸
Recent research by BHN Extras wellbeing platform in HR magazine shows the UK workforce is struggling to switch off out of working hours.
48% of employees are responding to work messages during annual leave. This not only means employees are not getting a break, it also shows lack of boundaries to other colleague and an expectation that others should adopt this behaviour. This makes for a challenging workplace culture.
39% have responded to messages whilst off sick. Again showing a lack of boundaries and an expectation that sickness is not seen as a time for resting and recovering. This also puts a huge pressure on employees to continue working through sickness and to not feel supported during times of sickness.
55% of CEOs are checking emails daily outside of work hours. If this is the behaviour being modelled from the top of the organisation then this sets an expectation to other mangers and teams. CEO's are in a powerful position to model positive mental health and wellbeing, and have a huge impact on psychological safety and workplace culture.
All of these statistics mentioned above impact the culture of the workplace which in turn impact mental health and wellbeing, job retention and productivity. Mental health in the workplace needs to be across the board and not down to HR alone.
✅ It needs leadership commitment from the top around wellbeing and psychological safety
✅ CEO's and Managers must model healthy behaviour, create trusted environments and actively support work/life balance
✅ Employees need clarity of roles, reasonable expectations, and psychological safety
